Other top business credit cards for construction and contractors

The following cards are not available through NerdWallet. Our editorial team still recommends them.
NerdWallet star rating: 4.7.
Big one-off purchases are no surprise with construction work. The Ink Business Premier® Credit Card offers a special reward rate for those. You'll earn unlimited 2.5% total cash back on purchases of $5,000 or more (unlimited 2% cash back on all other business purchases). This card does have a $195 annual fee. It's also a pay-in-full charge card. But you do have the option to finance purchases of $500 or more, up to a set limit.
NerdWallet star rating: 3.
The Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express is a great option for contractors who rely on the home improvement store for the bulk of their materials. The card offers a 5% discount on eligible Lowe's purchases, as well as 2% cash back on Lowe's purchases and other business expenses (for instance, office supplies and cell phone service). You'll get cash back as Lowe's Business Rewards points, which you can redeem for a statement credit or gift cards.
Lowe's has other business cards, including a commercial account with net-60 terms. But these options are less rewarding than the Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express.
NerdWallet has not rated this product.
If Home Depot is your hardware store of choice, it has two business card options for you. Between them, we prefer The Home Depot® Commercial Account. It's a pay-in-full option that offers 2% back for invoices you pay within 20 days. Otherwise, you can get net-60 terms.
The chain also has a revolving credit card, the Pro Xtra Credit Card. Its rewards are "perks" tied to the Home Depot's loyalty program (Pro Xtra). You might save money with these special benefits. But you definitely will by utilizing the 2% back option on the commercial card.

Alternative financing options for construction businesses

Flex your purchase power wisely. Don’t use a construction business credit card to finance large purchases, such as machinery, unless you’re in a position to pay the balance off quickly. The interest charges will hit your bottom line.
Instead, use your business credit card for everyday expenses and items you can pay off within the 0% APR period (if your card has one). And look to small-business loans to fund more substantial purchases.
  • Business line of credit: Lines of credit are similar to business credit cards — you can draw from either as needed, up to a set credit limit. Business lines of credit may offer more funding than even the highest-limit business credit cards — up to $250,000 or more — and often at lower interest rates. But you won’t earn perks like cash back or have your interest waived for any period of time. Business owners can tap into a line of credit to smooth out the dips and dives in their regular cash flow.
  • Equipment financing: You can use an equipment loan to purchase everything from office equipment to construction machinery to heavy-duty vehicles. Equipment loans typically carry an interest rate of 8% to 30%, making them a more affordable option for financing machinery purchases, especially if you have a FICO credit score of 630 or higher.

Methodology

NerdWallet's business credit card team selects the best small-business credit cards without outside input from partners or other business interests. We evaluate business cards based on value and simplicity, weighing fees, sign-up bonuses and reward rates, alongside perks like interest-free periods, statement credits and elite status (for travel cards). Business cards that earn the highest scores deliver the most value to the greatest number of business owners.
Notable changes to our methodology for 2025 include factoring in whether spending on employee cards earns rewards and counts toward the welcome offer requirements. We also now consider what information the card issuer reports to consumer credit bureaus. Learn how NerdWallet rates small-business credit cards.
